New Zealand · South Island
Queenstown & Christchurch
July 14–17, 2026 • two sub-trips, one island
Two nights in Queenstown at the Crowne Plaza, then across the Southern Alps to Christchurch and into Wayne & Kate's hands. With plenty of Melbourne time around it, an earlier flight in buys a full first afternoon on the lake. Milford Sound (Wednesday) and the Mt Cook scenic run (Thursday) are booked and happen rain or shine — so the one thing left to chance is the Milky Way, and there are two nights to gamble on a clear sky.
Queenstown
Two nights, two cracks at the Milky Way — and a full first day if the early flight lands.
Tuesday · arrival & the lake
A full first day on the water
Banking on an earlier flight out of Melbourne — that's the whole reason this afternoon exists.
- midday
Fly in from MelbourneSolo from here — Tucker stays on for the Deakin internship. The earlier flight's the plan, with plenty of Melbourne time around it.

TSS Earnslaw — steam across the lakeThe 1912 coal-fired "Lady of the Lake": a 1.5-hr cruise on Wakatipu, engine room open to wander, bar aboard. Sails from Steamer Wharf at 88 Beach St — next door to the hotel. (Confirm the exact July sailing on the timetable.)
- ~3:45p
Kiwi Birdlife ParkA 5-minute walk, right at the gondola base. Catch the 3:45pm kiwi encounter — winter last entry is 4:15pm, and this is the only afternoon it fits.
- dusk
Skyline Gondola up — and a few Luge runsStraight up from the Kiwi park. A couple of luge laps while there's still light, then settle in up top.
- eve
Milky Way · roll oneClear: the 7:30pm Skyline Stargazing tour — the Southern Cross, the Magellanic Clouds, Saturn's rings through the 11" telescopes. Cloudy: a Stratosfare buffet dinner over the lights, plus the indoor "Journey of the Night Sky" if the itch is still there. Book ahead either way.
The whole day sits within a few hundred metres of the Crowne Plaza — boat, birds, gondola, all on foot. No car, no transfers.
Wednesday · Milford Sound

- night
Milky Way · roll two — long shotA second go if Tuesday clouded out. The honest catch: the ~7:30pm return lands right when the winter tour starts, so it only works if you're back early and the sky's clear — worth a call to Skyline about a later slot. Otherwise, Tuesday was the night.
Thursday · over the Southern Alps
The scenic way to Christchurch
